AI & Human Judgement

Seasoned Judgement, Amplified by AI

The tools we use keep changing. Through every shift I have witnessed in nearly four decades, one thing has held: the judgement is human, and the tool amplifies it.

Organisations have always been about three things: business, decisions and people. The aids we use to deliver them keep changing. But judgement, alongside whatever technology the age has offered, was always what made them work.

To do this well, an organisation brings a few things together: it shapes a strategy, it executes that strategy through proven practices, and it builds the capability and talent that sustains the results. These are old ideas, far older than any machine. They have matured over decades through judgement, and through the new technology that arrived along the way. Each new tool changed how the work was done. None of them changed what the work was for.

From the late 1980s, I have had the privilege of watching several of those shifts first-hand, and remarkably close.

I helped roll out one of the earliest bank branch-automation programs, at a time when the idea itself was still novel. A few years later I was part of a team building one of the very first wealth-management portals, over an internet that was still finding its feet. I then helped consolidate a bank’s customer relationships across branch, internet and mobile, when bringing those channels together was far from a solved problem. Later I led a large payments transformation for a global bank, and went on to build a payments practice that carried the same strategy and the same best practices to many clients at once.

More recently, as an investor and mentor to start-ups in data science and space technology, I have watched the frontier move again, this time toward machines that can reason, not merely compute.

Through every one of those shifts, the same pattern held. A powerful new aid arrived. It changed the pace and the possibility of the work. And the judgement of what to do with it stayed exactly where it had always been: with people who had sat in enough rooms, and seen enough decisions play out, to know what genuinely mattered.

AI, to me, is simply the next step in that long progression. Except this time the shift feels less incremental and more a genuine leap in what becomes possible.

The tools are extraordinary. They can research in minutes what once took weeks, surface patterns a single mind would miss, and assemble a considered recommendation at a pace we could not have imagined even a few years ago.

But a tool, however powerful, does not decide what a business actually needs. It cannot read what is left unsaid in a room, or weigh a choice the way someone accountable for its consequences must. That reading is earned across years, not generated in seconds, and it stays human.

Seasoned human judgement, amplified by AI

This is the conviction the firm is built on, and it is why we say it plainly. The judgement stays entirely human. AI amplifies it, letting richer solutions be shaped and delivered faster than before, so that the full weight of experience is brought to every decision, at every stage of the work.

The aid has changed once more. What it is for has not.
